A train journey can be many things. For some, it’s an opportunity to catch up on sleep. For others, it’s a chance to enjoy the scenery, read a book or simply do nothing.
But for a working professional, a train journey can also be an extension of the workplace.
I recently travelled on Vande Bharat Chair Car. During the journey, I read a book, listened to an audiobook and worked on the preparation for a two-day training programme on cracking Group Discussions (GD) for freshers.
This wasn’t going to be another programme filled with gyan, motivational speeches or theoretical lectures. I wanted participants to practise, participate, make mistakes, learn and improve. Two days of practical learning, with action expected from the participants.
And there I was, travelling comfortably while switching between reading, listening and working.
It got me thinking about how train journeys can be more than just getting from Point A to Point B.
For a working professional, a well-designed train journey can become a productive part of the day.
India’s Vande Bharat trains have brought a refreshing change to railway travel. Modern interiors, comfortable seating, faster journeys and improved onboard facilities have raised expectations.
What Does a Working Professional Need from Vande Bharat?

1. A comfortable seat that lets you get things done
A comfortable seat isn’t just about physical relaxation. It allows you to concentrate on what you are doing.
Whether it’s reading a book, preparing a presentation, responding to emails or reviewing a document, adequate legroom, a convenient seating position and a reasonably peaceful environment matter.
2. Connectivity that keeps you connected
A professional doesn’t necessarily want to disconnect from the world while travelling.
Sometimes, you need to check an email, download a document, attend to a client or coordinate with your team.
Reliable internet connectivity and mobile network coverage can make those hours considerably more useful.
3. Charging points that actually support your work
Our professional lives revolve around devices. Smartphones, laptops, tablets and wireless accessories need power.
Conveniently located and functional charging points are a basic requirement for anyone hoping to use travel time productively.
4. A little peace and personal space

Not everyone wants to spend the journey chatting with fellow passengers or watching videos at full volume.
Some want to read. Some want to listen to an audiobook. Others want to concentrate on work.
A little consideration for fellow passengers, reasonable noise levels and a comfortable environment can make a big difference.
5. Clean washrooms and good hygiene
This hardly needs an explanation.
Clean, hygienic and regularly maintained washrooms should be a standard feature, not something passengers celebrate as an unexpected bonus.

6. Food and refreshments that complement the journey
A good cup of tea, decent coffee, fresh food and timely service can make a journey enjoyable.
Professionals travelling between meetings or assignments don’t always have the luxury of planning elaborate meals around their train schedule.

7. Safety without having to constantly worry
A passenger should be able to concentrate on a book, work or even sleep without worrying about personal belongings or personal security.
Well-lit coaches, CCTV surveillance, secure access and responsive onboard staff contribute to a reassuring travel experience.
The journey that prepares you for the destination
A good train journey is not simply about reaching your destination faster.
It is about reaching there comfortably, safely and with enough energy to get on with what brought you to that city in the first place.
Whether it is a daytime journey in Vande Bharat Chair Car or an overnight trip in Vande Bharat Sleeper, the expectations of a working professional are quite straightforward:
Give me, the travelling professional, a comfortable seat or berth, reliable connectivity, clean facilities, good food, security and punctuality.
I am not asking for a five-star hotel on wheels.
I am asking for a train that understands the needs of a modern traveller.
Because the journey to work shouldn’t leave you exhausted before the work even begins.
What about Vande Bharat Sleeper?
While my experience was in the Chair Car, the expectations from an overnight Sleeper journey would be slightly different.
For someone travelling overnight for a business meeting, training assignment or client visit, a comfortable berth, clean bedding, hygienic washrooms, secure luggage arrangements and a peaceful sleeping environment become particularly important.
I look forward to my first journey aboard the Vande Bharat Sleeper. It will be interesting to experience it firsthand and see how it measures up to the expectations of a working professional on the move.
After all, the objective is not merely to reach the destination. It’s to arrive refreshed and ready for the day’s work.
A train journey can be productive without feeling like work
I enjoyed my Vande Bharat journey because I could make good use of the time without feeling compelled to work every minute.
I could read when I wanted to read, listen when I wanted to listen and work when I needed to work.

That’s perhaps what a modern working professional wants from a train journey.
Not a five-star hotel on wheels. Not a corporate office on rails.
Just a comfortable, safe, clean and dependable environment that gives passengers the freedom to use their travel time the way they choose.
Because a good journey doesn’t just take you to your destination. It helps you arrive ready for it.
