It’s happening: Double Takkar 3.0, Coimbatore Vizha’s Double Decker Bus Ride
A long time back in the early 90s when I was in Mumbai, double-decker busses were a common sight in the city. I loved sitting on the upper deck right in front facing the window and looking at the passing scenes.
I love to go on a long drive even though I can’t ride a two-wheeler or drive a car. So, I used to take this opportunity to catch a double-decker bus and sit on the upper deck way in the front facing the window. The bus used to take about an hour or so to reach the destination. I loved sitting and watching the city as it lit up when the sky turned from dusk to dark.
It always was a great travelling experience.
So, when my wife showed me a video of a colorful double-decker bus maneuvering the roads of Coimbatore, my travel memories from Mumbai rushed into my mind.
I got curious to find out more.
And I found out that come January and the city of Coimbatore gears up to celebrate Coimbatore Vizha!
2024 will witness the 16th edition of this annual festival.
Turning the pages back on the history of Coimbatore Vizha, I found that this yearly festival was initiated in the year 2009. Over the years it has garnered support from famous institutions and year-on-year this event is becoming highly popular with citizen participation.

This year the event will be held from Tuesday, 2nd January to Monday, 8th January, 2024.
One of the highlights of this spirit of Coimbatore celebration is two majestic-looking open double-decker buses that will take the public on a tour of the city.
Another interesting aspect of these double-decker buses is that one of these buses is said to have transported our cricket stars during the 2011 Cricket World Cup.
The buses are dubbed ‘Double Takkar 3.0’.
Like other big events, Coimbatore Vizha too has its very own mascot. The mascot of the festival is Chippy – the state bird of Tamil Nadu. Interestingly, this bird is also known as the ‘Emerald Princess’.

1. Booking is permitted only using the app. On-the-spot booking is not available.
2. Booking confirmation and ID proof is mandatory for passengers to board the bus.
3. Entry pass cannot be rescheduled and is non-transferable.
4. Please be present 15 minutes before the departure time; failure to do so will result in automatic cancellation of your booking.
5. Boarding closes 10 minutes before departure.
6. There are no seat numbers, seating location is on a first come first serve basis.
7. Passengers have to follow the guidelines and instructions as informed by the organisers before every trip.
– For the safety of other passengers, organisers reserve the right to de-board passengers not complying with the instructions.
8. Children below age 10 will have to be strictly accompanied by an adult. A separate seat will be given to children above 7 years of age only.
9. The bus is a non-commercial social initiative. The organisers are not liable for any compulsion to run the service if any unavoidable situations arise.
10. Food and drink are strictly not permitted.
11. Only backpacks and purses are allowed as carry-on luggage; other types of baggage are not permitted on board.
